Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome. Isaac Asimov

This memorial website was created with the intention of keeping alive the memory of our loved one, Martha Fonta who was born in BamendaCameroon on March 16, 1966 to Josenta Amina and Albert Nguwoh Fonta. Martha, fondly known as "Mama" passed away on January 13, 2009.

Mama shall be mightily missed, greatly loved and tenderly remembered forever.

Prior to Martha's arrival in the United States of America in 1988, she underwent her secondary and post-secondary education at Government High School Mamfe - Cameroon and Government High School Limbe - Cameroon respectively.

For over 15 years Martha has been yearning earnestly to be a mother. She longed to give birth and care for a child - her own child. On Saturday, January 10, 2009 this dream was fulfilled as Martha gave birth to her treasured Marie Angel.

Martha had spent a good part of her adult life waiting for this day. In Marie Angel, Martha saw everything good. This day met Martha very prepared to give the baby all the love and warmth that a mother could offer a child.

As nature will have it, the romance could only last as long as it did. On Tuesday, February 13, 2009 Martha died of breathing complications.

Martha was a God-fearing, sincere and worthy friend to many. She touched people's lives in wonderful ways. When Martha considered anyone a friend, it meant she was ready to always go an extra mile to make life worth living to such individual. The testimonies that shall be made at this website will attest to that.

Since this demise, the Friends of Martha (including most of you) have been meeting on Conference Calls three times a week. These friends nurse a burning desire to give back to Martha what she would have joyfully given to any of us in a similar situation. We desire to give Martha a befitting burial and aspire to stand in the gap created by this unfortunate event. This shall be part of many ways the Friends of Martha shall be of comfort to Marie Angel and the rest of the Fonta Family. Though Martha may not be physically present, there shall be a concious effort to ensure that her issues shall be adequately catered for.

A Tribute to Martha

By Vivian Tebo-Bennett

Martha, for about half of our lives, we’ve known each other. I cannot forget when we first became friends – in the Upper Sixth at G.H.S. Limbe.

You, Tanyi Alice, Beatrice Agbor and I – we were inseparable! We had the best year! Our friendship continued even after High School. I came over to The United States, and a couple of years later, you joined me in Silver Spring, Maryland.

We roomed together with Asumpta for a little while before you and Denise, my cousin, fell in love. You moved out. A couple of years later, I moved to Florida. Our friendship continued with calls, letters and visits.

Then you gave me the surprise of my life when you showed up at the hospital the day after I delivered Cassie. You got me situated until my sister Estella came. Then you returned to Maryland. Later, the news came about your pregnancy. We thanked God! When we talked on Monday, January 12th at 5:33 p.m., you had just returned from the hospital. We talked about your good experiences and “the miracle of a new life.” We thanked God again for Baby Marie. You and the baby were doing well. You were in good spirits. You called her, “Precious” and “an Angel.” I was so happy after our conversation.

That same day, while I was taking Cassie to piano lessons, I was thinking of you and both the good times and the bad times we’ve shared as friends. And then I thought about how beautiful the baby must be coming from such a beautiful woman. I couldn’t wait to come see you all.

Then, the very next day – Tuesday -- at about 7 a.m., the news came that you’ve been called by Our Creator. I am glad that I had one more opportunity to share another “good life experience” with you just before “home going.”

Well, my dear Martha, you were a friend who taught me that:

M – is for mindful of others.

A – is for appreciation for what others do for us.

R – is for reliable.

T – is for trustworthy.

H – is for honesty.

A – is for “Angel,” the precious gift you have left for us to cherish.

I love you and will miss you, but most of all God loves you!

I am looking at the memorial page, and it's just unbelievable. Martha and I were classmates in GHS Limbe and we were also had family connections, by marriage. As someone who recently lost a sister, this all brings back the memories of the shock!

F. Perez My deepest condolences March 16, 2019

My condolences, as feelings of pain and bitterness become unbearable. It is my desire to convey a comforting thought based on the Holy Scriptures

John 5:28 "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out."

This passage speaks of the resurrection of our loved ones. It is not God's plan to see us suffer and die, so He extends the following invitation to us: "Come near to God and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8)

Please go to the following link to obtain more information regarding the Hope expressed in this passage and again we are sorry for your loss.

MRS. SALLY VEGA DEAR DAUGHTER February 17, 2009

MY DEAR DAUGHTER,

WHEN FLORENCE INTRODUCED YOU TO ME AS HER FRIEND, MY WORLD CHANGED, BECAUSE I HAD NEVER MET ANY OF HER FRIENDS SO KIND, SWEET, AND FULL OF JOY.

WE PRAYED TOGETHER, SHARED STORIES, LAUGHTER AND GOOD TIMES AS MOTHER AND DAUGHTER. WHEN YOU CAME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL WITH OUR LITTLE ANGEL, YOU CALLED ME AND WE TALKED FOR HOURS. WAS THAT A GOODBYE CALL? WHO ELSE CAN ANSWER THAT QUESTION BUT OUR GOD.

DEAR DUAGHTER, I EVEN TRIED TO CALL YOUR NUMBER - OOPS - I JUST REMEMBERED THERE IS NO PHONE WHERE YOU ARE.

GO IN PEACE MY LOVE, WE SHALL MEET AGAIN. YOU MAY BE GONE BUT TO ME, YOU ARE ALWAYS HERE WITH ME. REST WELL MARTHA. LOVE YOU.

Boni Awundaga So long Neighbor February 5, 2009

Sister Martha,

You fulfilled your mission in life and God called you back home at his most suitable time. Those left behind have to find a way to adjust to your absence but will always remain grateful to God for allowing you to be a part of our lives. We pray he strengthens us spiritually to cope with this sense of loss. You have left uncountable pleasant memories to remember especially as my neighbor back at The Chateau.   You have exemplified qualities of kindness, selflessness and you left on a high note with the introduction to motherhood. We pray that God guides and takes care of your child to grow and carry on your legacy. As you live in his Divine presence, remember us. Thanks again for sharing your life with us, Sister Martha.
