A Tribute to Martha

By Vivian Tebo-Bennett

Martha, for about half of our lives, we’ve known each other. I cannot forget when we first became friends – in the Upper Sixth at G.H.S. Limbe.

You, Tanyi Alice, Beatrice Agbor and I – we were inseparable! We had the best year! Our friendship continued even after High School. I came over to The United States, and a couple of years later, you joined me in Silver Spring, Maryland.

We roomed together with Asumpta for a little while before you and Denise, my cousin, fell in love. You moved out. A couple of years later, I moved to Florida. Our friendship continued with calls, letters and visits.

Then you gave me the surprise of my life when you showed up at the hospital the day after I delivered Cassie. You got me situated until my sister Estella came. Then you returned to Maryland. Later, the news came about your pregnancy. We thanked God! When we talked on Monday, January 12th at 5:33 p.m., you had just returned from the hospital. We talked about your good experiences and “the miracle of a new life.” We thanked God again for Baby Marie. You and the baby were doing well. You were in good spirits. You called her, “Precious” and “an Angel.” I was so happy after our conversation.

That same day, while I was taking Cassie to piano lessons, I was thinking of you and both the good times and the bad times we’ve shared as friends. And then I thought about how beautiful the baby must be coming from such a beautiful woman. I couldn’t wait to come see you all.

Then, the very next day – Tuesday -- at about 7 a.m., the news came that you’ve been called by Our Creator. I am glad that I had one more opportunity to share another “good life experience” with you just before “home going.”

Well, my dear Martha, you were a friend who taught me that:

M – is for mindful of others.

A – is for appreciation for what others do for us.

R – is for reliable.

T – is for trustworthy.

H – is for honesty.

A – is for “Angel,” the precious gift you have left for us to cherish.

I love you and will miss you, but most of all God loves you!

I am looking at the memorial page, and it's just unbelievable. Martha and I were classmates in GHS Limbe and we were also had family connections, by marriage. As someone who recently lost a sister, this all brings back the memories of the shock!
